Schools Are Opening Without More Federal Aid

The Democrats better pass that bill with $128 billion of school aid (on top of the more than $60 billion already appropriated but not yet spent) as quickly as possible because the schools are finally opening in most of the country without a penny more of federal school “aid.” Some $90 billion isn’t to be spent until 2023 or later when COVID-19 will long be in the history books.

While the news is positive on school openings, the Centers for Disease Control union-dictated guidance has slowed progress, probably as intended. Still, the latest Burbio public school tracker shows almost half of kids have in-person learning and only one-in-four are stuck with “virtual” instruction:

  • 27.5% of U.S. K-12 students are attending “virtual-only” schools, down from 31.1% last week.
  • 44.7% of U.S. K-12 students attending “traditional” in-person/every day schools.
  • 27.8% U.S. K-12 students are attending “hybrid” schools.

And here is a breakout by the two worst regions of the country versus the rest:

The latest map of where schools are open by state looks a lot like a map of labor market health. More evidence that school closures are economically destructive in addition to being harmful to children.

  • The vaccines are wonderful. We can now start schools safely, with teachers, bus drivers cafeteria and other workers vaccinated.
We could have saved hundreds of thousands of Americans with a decent federal response. It was Bolton who got rid of the Pandemic Task Force established by Obama.
