    This is becoming a tiresome story. Journalists predicted catastrophe. When the catastrophe stubbornly refuses to appear, the critics claim that it is only because Trump shows flexibility. Thus they claim, as does the insufferable Abby Phillips, “We weren’t really wrong. In fact, we actually were absolutely correct.”

    OK, but possibly Trump’s flexibility derives from the fact that he was never committed to these tariffs in the first place, that he was staking out a position to enable flexibility. Look, I purchased some ranches long ago and I didn’t start the negotiations over price by telling the seller “OK, I’ll give you full price.”
