“Luck is the residue of design.” – Branch Rickey, legendary baseball executive
Yes, conservatives, on Tuesday night, ABC moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis harassed The Donald, coddled Kamala, and broke their rule by opening her mic to interrupt.
But here’s the deal: Harris was ready and rarin’ with a better-designed strategy to make her case and get under that orange skin. From the opening handshake she initiated, she capitalized on the luck of the draw: not just the network, but also an opponent who stumbled, rambled, and ranted.
Kamala showed up flawlessly turned out – contrasting her CNN appearance – confident … and superbly prepped.
She pounded home her (meager) Opportunity Economy platform: subsidize babies, housing, and small businesses. She successfully reprised her (ridiculous) claim that a “bipartisan” bill would have solved the border crisis she and Joe Biden created.
She also pulled a Houdini act on:
- Abortion: responding “come on” to Trump’s insistence that she be asked about late-term abortion, even as she winningly burst into high dudgeon about purported hardships on women from state bans.
- Gun buybacks. We know hunter Tim Walz owns guns. But Kamala? Really?
- National security – again landing on both sides of the Israeli-Hamas conflict, managing to sound presidential about her role in gaining allied support for Ukraine and preserving NATO, and spinning the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal into a positive.
But in particular, on her fracking about-face, where Kamala added some new wrinkles: that the Inflation Reduction Act “opened new leases for fracking,” and claiming “the largest increase in domestic oil production in history.”
Above all, Kamala positioned herself as above-the-fray: “turn the page on tired rhetoric.” A “true leader … lifting people up.” The prosecutor with “only one client: the people.”
Meanwhile, the Democratic nominee implemented a picador-esque ploy: poke the bull under the skin just enough to weaken while also goading.
To cite just a few examples:
- Setting the stage: viewers would “hear from the same old, tired playbook – a bunch of lies, grievances and name-calling.” Later characterizing Trump as “extreme.”
- Mischaracterizing The Donald’s tariff proposals as an inflationary, budget-busting national sales tax financing tax cuts for billionaires “on the backs of middle-class taxpayers.”
- Audaciously claiming that Joe Biden and she were left to “clean up Donald Trump’s mess:” “the worst unemployment since the Great Depression,” “the worst public health epidemic in a century,” and “the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War.”
- Incredibly charging that Trump is “weak and wrong on national security and foreign policy” because he “admires dictators” and can be manipulated “with flattery and favors.”
- Resurfacing the Charlottesville canard along with claims that Trump “consistently disparaged and demeaned … fallen soldiers,” complete with a paean to John McCain, whom the 45th president did in fact disparage.
- And stunningly turning the charge of justice-system “weaponization” back on her opponent, imagining “Donald Trump back in the White House … with no guardrails” after the Supreme Court immunity decision.
All while commanding the screen as Trump spoke, with headshakes, smirks, smiles, and once, even a hand placed thoughtfully on her chin to further undermine her opponent’s credibility.
Yet the true turning point came when the vice president went beyond getting under Trump’s skin. She coolly plunged the stiletto in deep and twisted it, attacking his pride and joy: his rallies.
Where, she maintained, The Donald talks about “fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter” and “windmills causing cancer.” Where “people start leaving … early out of exhaustion and boredom.” And where “the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you.”
Steam poured out of the MAGA leader’s ears. Already coming across as sullen and angry compared to Harris’ practiced, deft touch, Trump shouted repeatedly into the microphone – far too hot for the “cool” broadcast medium.
And succumbed more deeply to the missteps and missed opportunities that plagued him the entire evening as he rose to Kamala’s cleverly laid bait:
- Wasting precious moments whining about insufficient credit for a COVID response that wasn’t his finest hour.
- Citing naturally supportive Fox News hosts who debunked the Charlottesville “fine people” slander instead of liberals like CNN’s Jake Tapper and Snopes.
- Not having an answer as to why he commented on his opponent’s race: having it “every which way” is a longstanding pattern of the untrustworthy Ms. Harris.
- Introducing confusion on abortion by distancing himself from his own running mate on a ban and rambling on about the Roe reversal. Instead of just asserting: “I’ve stated I oppose a federal ban because overturning Roe returned the issue to the states where it belongs. Next question?
- Failing to raise his proposal to federally finance IVF.
- Never responding to the border bill charge: why intervene on a bill all House Republicans opposed, since its enforcement provisions had more holes than Swiss cheese on a firing range?
- Not repeating J.D. Vance’s thoughtful explanation on implementing deportation – start with the worst cases, criminals and gang members, and go from there.
- An extended, tone-deaf discussion of the 2020 election steal – Americans want to move on. Plus praise from perceived strongman Victor Orban?
- Overfocusing on Kamala’s past positions and not underscoring that economists have laughed off her proposed price controls and housing subsidies, while her small business tax credits would be offset by economy-wrecking corporate and capital gains tax hikes.
- Repeating the unsubstantiated social media accusation that Haitian immigrants overrunning Springfield, Ohio, ate house pets.
- Being goaded into discussing the Taliban instead of just confronting “the last person in the room” with 13 dead servicemembers and billions in equipment and a strategic airfield left behind. (Mic drop.)
- As always, engaging in hyperbole and unrehearsed, rambling diatribes and inside-baseball digs that fly over voters’ heads.
- And deliberately (as he admitted on Fox) saving his best attack line – go wake up Joe Biden now and implement your proposals – for his close.
The bottom line: the 3-on-1 disadvantage hindered Trump. But not as much as Kamala’s well-designed strategy. And Trump’s own angry-old-man posture and unforced errors.
Luck and design both ran Kamala’s way. As did the night.

Very thorough analysis of the debate. Thanks Mr Maistros.
I am a Trumpster and I’d like to say President Trump obviously overpowered his opponent last night.
But he didn’t. I cannot see any Independent being convinced last night, by Trump’s performance, to vote for him. I feel that it is nearly a tautology that if Kamala gets in then this nation-already on a downward spiral- is lost. I’m not even sure President Trump can fix it-but he’s got great instincts.
He sees a problem and then he solves it.
Kamala/Biden didn’t even see the problems (some they created), and-amazingly-without seeing them, they made the problem worse. Kamala’s “solutions” last night will just make us go down the hill faster.
Yes! President Trump was a great President. I just wish he had been a better debater last night.
We must have watched different debates.
In Kamala Harris, I saw a candidate that did little more than deliver a series of well memorized speeches but I didn’t walk away with any belief that Kamala Harris has a clue to what has gone wrong in America or what would make America better. Kamala Harris was distracting with her constant gesticulating and head bobbing as though she were trying to convince herself of what she was saying. How can Kamala offer that catchy “New Way Forward” vibe when she refuses to acknowledge the problems her policies have created? What is she planning that is new?
In Donald Trump, I saw a less than stellar performance. Given the entire charade was set to trigger Trump, it was not surprising. Trump rambled at times but you could connect much of what he was saying to reality. He hammered at the 2 most significant and intertwined issues facing Americans – immigration and the economy. Trump has a successful record of doing what he said he would.
In the media, I saw a focus on putting on a show with a few cheap shots thrown in that was not interesting and did not cover the election issues. I mean how important was it to the nation to cover the various racial identities of Kamala Harris – a cheap shot to tee up Kamala calling Trump a racist? It was pure junior high school mentality.
I thought Kamala came off very, very manufactured. Sometimes I could see the struggle in her eyes to remember certain parts of her speeches. I have zero confidence that Harris could actually think and speak on her feet. My God, it took her nearly 2 months to scrape together a few policy ideals that are not any new way forward. She hides from the people. In short Kamala Harris does not exhibit leadership. Kamala Harris is always a disconnect and you can feel it.
Donald Trump shows true passion for this country and despite his rambling it comes through. He shows leadership and has a strong record of leadership.
But then what would I know? I am just a middle class voter watching other middle class Americans in a serious struggle instead of just listening to cheap talk.
Yes, DJT could have done better, but that said he was really up against a lot — the moderators, Harris, and ABC. Harris came off vicious and ruthless, IMO, and her (non) answers were obviously scripted and memorized over the course of her five day prep.
Trump came off as flawed and frustrated, but human. The naysayers will object to his anger. Come on. This man has been through the mill with the Democrats and he’s not supposed to feel angry? Nonsense. Harris spouted outright lies all night long and not one was challenged by the moderators. Harris did not answer a single question and moderators did not follow up even once. Trump did ramble at times, unfortunately, but he obviously was frustrated by the “anything goes” attitude of the other participants in the debate.
If the voters still do not recognize who or what Harris is after the debate, good luck America. The threat comes not from Trump, but from her. Take a close look.
Trump is running a multi-$Billion business, fighting numerous lawfare lawsuits and court cases, and traveling the country taking his message to The People. Kamala is doing exactly what she has done since taking over as VP… absolutely nothing. Trump has a record that I loved that was successful. Kamala has no record, except far Leftist radicalism and failure. I don’t care how much Kamala prepared or what she says, because we can she what she will really do by her handling of the border (100% failure), her failure with the economy (99.9% failure) and the Afghanistan withdrawal (99.999% failure). Not to mention there is a very high likelihood she not only received the questions in advance, but actually got to write them.
I agree with pretty much everything. I’m supporting Trump no matter what, but I don’t matter. It’s the undecideds.
As for the “fine people hoax”, Trump should’ve said the left-leaning Snopes also debunked it. The problem with Trump is that again he didn’t prepare. Kamala is a well-honed prosecutor. Did he not see her grill Judge Kavanaugh during his confirmation? She brazenly put forth more lies that even the GOP senators had a tough time swatting away.
So many missed opportunities it’s hard to count. But the moderators were so blatantly biased even lefties couldn’t defend them (but they are). She said so many outright lies that Trump spent most of the night being redefined by her. And I swear they raised the volume level on Trump’s mic to make him sound loud and angry. She also sounded like she got the answers beforehand (as it has happened with other debates).
With only one bout scheduled, Disney-owned ABC made the decision to destroy Trump during the debate. I’d love to sit down and tell Trump how to win this time around but I’m a nobody in his orbit. He doesn’t even read replies to his posts at Truth Social based on reports I’ve heard (so why bother).
Trump underestimated Kamala based on her public word salads. She was rehearsing for nearly two weeks and being prepped by some of the toughest partisans in the country. Did he not see this coming? I’ll be voting for him because four years of more Biden policies (which Trump rightly pointed out she plagiarized) will bring our country to its knees.
Granted he was manipulated in this 3 vs 1 fight. However, the statement about the cats is based on truth. The Democratic authorities in the area are insisting that the citizens not believe their eyes or ears, nor pay attention to photographs and videos and should toe the party line that Haitians are fine people.
In reality the Haitian savages are eating pets. There was one recording of a Haitian on her knees eating a dead cat killed, raw. It brought to my mind one of the zombie apocalypse movies.
