  • I admire the artistic skill of the prize wining cartoonist Ramirez, though the message may be a bit misleading. North American tribes were no more draconian than Europeans in warfare, religion (see holy Inquisition) and exploitation. Though politicized, it has also spawned an equal and opposite reaction. Nevertheless, native Americans preceded Europeans and should also be acknowledged, I suppose. As an example, Columbus Day is a comforting tradition with historical merit and should not be abandoned for political expediency. Yet, there are good reasons to recognize Indigenous Americans and their descendants, as first inhabitants. There should be no conflict – just proclaim the day and I’ll take the holiday. Seriously, this entire matter has been overblown in both directions.
