A major theme of the Hotline over these past 10 months is that you can’t trust a single word the mainstream media reports on Covid. CNN, NYT, Wash Post are filled with daily blasts of dread about the new wave of the virus that will infect us all. Expect four to six more months of lockdowns, masks, school closures we are told.
Here’s the latest data: From their peaks about a month ago, cases are down 56%; positive percentage is down 51%; hospital census is down 35%; ICU census is down 28%; deaths are down 16%. Every region of the country is falling in every metric now, and sharply.
The Media warns of Super Bowl parties that are supposedly the new super-spreader — just like Thanksgiving and Christmas, even though those had no discernible effect on the disease curves. While the victory celebration in Tampa may not have been the wisest thing in the world – it is worth noting that the corona-maniacal sports predicted mass outbreaks of the virus after Alabama’s win a month ago and all the metrics in Alabama since have crashed like everywhere else. (The virus spreads very poorly outdoors.)

As for the latest fear, the UK variant, have you heard CNN report that cases in the UK are down 75% from their January 8 peak?
As we’ve previously noted, the UK variant has been circulating in the United States since early November, so whatever effect is it likely to have probably already happened.
We think the vaccine — especially for the elderly and medically vulnerable — is the critical step to prevent a potential future wave. But there is nothing to justify short-term doom and gloom when all the metrics are moving so sharply down.
The media should try reporting some good news for once!
Biden Jobs Plan: Replace High-paying Oil/Gas Jobs with Low-Paying Green Energy Jobs
Energy and Environment (E&E) news recently compared oil and gas jobs with green energy jobs:
“Coal, oil and gas workers can make as much as $80,000 or $100,000 per year, with overtime, depending on the position and seniority.”
“As of 2019, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the average solar installation job paid $45,000 a year, a bit less than the average salary for wind energy technicians.”
E&E also notes that the job retraining programs in place since the 1990s for displaced coal workers in West Virginia have put former miners into positions that average $14 an hour.
What a deal!
