Why Is The Mob Winning?

Columnist, farmer and classicist Victor Davis Hanson has cast the 2020 election as a choice between civilization and a return to primitivism. It’s unfortunate that we’ve come to that, but here we are.

“I don’t want to get political,” Hanson, also a Hoover Institution senior fellow, told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson last week, “but this election no longer is about Donald Trump’s tweeting. It’s not about Joe Biden’s cognitive impairment. It has nothing to do anymore with a lockdown, the virus, the economy, foreign policy.

“It’s an existential question. A Manichean choice between whether you want civilization and you believe that America doesn’t have to be perfect to be good.”

Basement-bound Biden is the titular leader of America and the West’s regression from civilization. As the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, it’s a position he has no choice but to hold. His party is now controlled by elements bent on tearing down hundreds of years of progress. He could make a difference. But he won’t. It’s too easy to tread along with the wave.

So where are we in America in June 2020? Standing by while threats to “burn it down” are put into action:

Riots, looting and arson. We’ve had both before. But there’s a sense that this time, too many in positions of influence are appeasing the criminals. They promise to defund the police, and blather happy talk about how a violent takeover of six city blocks in Seattle could bring a “summer of love.” Rather than condemn the violence and demand order through the law, the Democrats have both tacitly and explicitly approved the savagery. Trump adviser Boris Epshteyn reminds us that party operatives, “including more than a dozen staffers working for former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign,” as well as entertainers who think themselves serious thinkers, “have even contributed to groups that are bailing out looters and rioters who were arrested for their crimes.”

Earlier this month, Democratic consultant Douglas Schoen wrote in Fox News that “while Democrats can and should stand up for peaceful protests, they must draw a clear line at violence and civil disobedience, as well as looting, which we are seeing night after night.”

They must also, he continues, “emphasize that violent protesters should and will be punished, and the party needs to mediate far-left voices that say otherwise.” They have refused to take any of those actions and that in itself is an endorsement of the riots.

Meanwhile, New York Rep. Jerry Nadler has further empowered Anitifa by calling it “imaginary” even as a poll shows the Antifa candidate in Portland’s mayor’s race is within three percentage points of the leader and incumbent.

Statue and monument toppling. There are legal paths for the removal of icons that might be offensive to some. Tearing them down is mob behavior, which has been publicly encouraged by Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, and University of Wisconsin-Madison professor Sami Schalk.

The refusal by thousands of other elected officials, from local city halls to Congress, to condemn the crimes has only fueled the rampage. Carlson didn’t name names when he recently said on his show that “Democratic politicians don’t fear the mob. . . . They control the mob. The mob operates with their permission. These are their foot soldiers. This is their militia.” He didn’t need to. The Democrats’ connection is obvious.

Rewarding previously unacceptable behavior. London journalist Douglas Murray has the story on Cambridge University fellow Priyamvada Gopal. She was promoted to a full professorship after tweeting that “white lives don’t matter,” then presenting herself as a weak, offended victim after her tweet took some criticism. It’s just one of many instances of rancid conduct paying off because the perpetrator is a member of a protected class and the targets are part of a now politically maligned group, deserving of all the slurs thrown at them.

Cancel culture. We quote ourselves here: “Those who speak outside the narrative established by a hard-left mob that has marched through our institutions are blacklisted. … What was a non-controversial statement last week is grounds for a death sentence tomorrow. It seems every day we see someone caving in with a groveling apology, declaring they suddenly have a lot to learn, swearing they’re looking forward to the moment they can meet with their hostage-takers and work toward a resolution that will appease them.”

One recent instance among a boatload of infuriating examples is the firing of a professor from Catholic University for the sin of criticizing Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Compare his words to those of Gopal, who was rewarded for her clearly hateful statement. And then there’s Cornell law professor William Jacobson, under fire because he dared criticize Black Lives Matter.

Canonization of Black Lives Matter. This is not a civil rights group but a segregationist, marxist, anti-freedom, anti-speech band of radicals. Black Lives Matter is not the same as black lives matter.

Economic destruction. The Democrats are willing, even eager, to wreck the Trump economy if that will win them the election this fall and evict Donald Trump from the White House and Republicans from their Senate majority. They don’t care how much damage they cause, who or how many they hurt, just as long as they can increase their raw political power.

Pandemic lust. Every day we see headlines about the surges, explosions, and spikes in coronavirus infections is part of the march to backwardness. The objective is to divide, sow fear, raise the gloom factor, enfeeble us, and bury the Trump economy.

Nothing listed above promotes civility and civilization. Each is an ugly step backward, a loss of human progress, a turn toward a more tribal era. Yet we’re letting it happen. As Power Line’s John Hinderaker recently noted, it’s puzzling “as to why America is allowing itself to be bullied by people who are at best ignorant and hateful, and in many cases not in full possession of their faculties.” Pushback is nearly unheard of. We’re planting the seeds of our own demise because we choose barbarism by default when we fail to stand for a civilized society.

  • The mob behavior is purely to get a response that will be used against us. They act as agents provacatuers.

  • They are not winning…you are watching desperate panic of a dying party. While being propped up by an accomplice media. Propaganda is still propaganda at the end of the riot. The silent majority has not acted….yet

    • Agreed, it’s the left wing spinning further and further out of control and into insane, untenable arguments. It’s happening so rapidly that it’s burning out and turning into violent spasms. The “George Kirby” news cycle has long been forgotten.

  • “Pandemic lust. Every day we see headlines about the surges, explosions, and spikes in coronavirus infections is part of the march to backwardness. The objective is to divide, sow fear, raise the gloom factor, enfeeble us, and bury the Trump economy.”

Or,they could be accurate depictions of what is going on. You and your allies could take that as a message to wear masks, wash hands, and keep 6′ apart. You could show, by your principles, that public health is a nonpartisan issue and that the rioters are in the wrong.

You haven’t done this yet. You still won’t.

    • I don’t know whom you mean when you say “you haven’t done this….” I agree with every word in this piece, including the thes and the ands, and I am fully complying with any and all social distancing, etc. directions that have been given for my area. I am perfectly willing to comply with them, even if I find them annoying. Most people that I know on my side of the political aisle feel as I do about this.

But somebody needs to provide much better answers than we’ve been given about

      a. why the George Floyd related protests were considered OK behavior
      b. why Governors Cuomo, Murphy, et al. decided that lodging those infected with Covid in nursing homes wasn’t the stupidest idea of 2020
      c. why elected officials are siding with looters and rioters however subtly
      d. why people are now being summarily fired for voicing an unfashionable opinion, no matter that those opinions are widely held by many, and further,
      e. why was it OK for the WaPo to ruin a private citizen’s reputation and livelihood over a Halloween costume that she wore to a party 18 months ago.

I have other questions, but there are the ones that first come to mind.

    • You are one of the wisest people I’ve ever read. You know everything about everybody. That’s would be quite an accomplishment, if it were true.. You have no idea who is and how isn’t complying. (Have you not seen the Gay Pride parades, have you not seen the rioters, looters and arsonists, plying their trade without your proscribed head gear?) You paint with such a broad brush, You must also believe all Whites are Nationalists and Nazis. I feel sorry for you and your ilk that follow, like sheep, never questioning authority. I grew up in that era when “Question Authority” was the mantra of the day. I still do.

      • The left is not questioning authority. They are throwing a tantrum. All emotion, no reasoning.

  • Bloomberg, Zuckerman, Zuckerberg, Sulzberger and Bezos – billionaires who control the news and information media and ran the country and the economy for their own profit and gain until Donald Trump came along. We have one chance – the ballot box – to show that the ballot is better than the billions of dollars the Vampire Class possesses. If that fails, then welcome to the next Haiti.

    • Do not ignore Jack Dorsey and Al-Waleed Bin-Talal (Twitter) as well as the CEOs of sites such as Patreon, Instagram and the YouTube division of Alphabet (Google) which will allow flagrant incitements and doxxing of moderates on their platform but censor any criticism of such anonymous Stasi action.

    • This is the question all are now asking: what is to be done? Especially about the Media, we can vote the Dems out of office (and we must at every level) but we can’t vote out the NY Times, etc.

    • I’m sighting in new scopes for my rifles and looking for a militia to join.

    • Well, if everyone knew where the Board of the NYT and Twitter were in the fall, winter, spring and summer, including street address, photos, height weight and family likely present … it might be healthy. But most of us are old and pacifist, so they’d be excessively safe.

Still … they BLAntifa-crats have stated they wish to be a mashup of the Jacobins, the Bolsheviks and Nat Turner. Shall we wait, wait, wait, until we are in a virtual gulag, with a decentralized physical version to follow shortly?

  • Trump is running ads on TV here in Idaho. Let that sink in. A state he won by 32 points last time around. If the people around him think they’ve got to spend money here, he’s in more trouble than anyone is letting on.

I think it’s time for a Goldwater goes to Nixon moment. Somebody has got to go to the White House and tell him the situation is unrecoverable, and that he’s got to step aside so that he doesn’t drag the rest of us down with him.

  • The mob is not ‘winning”. They kinda control 3 blocks in Seattle. They have burned parts of their own neighborhoods. They might be temporarily thrilled that with the “leaders” of various cities abdicating their responsibility to protect life and property, they have torn down a few statues and the weak willed socialists are not opposing them. But the rest of the country is seeing what a democratic socialist regime would do to the U.S. Defund the police? Yah that seems to be going over well in NYC and a few places. As crime skyrockets, millions of new gun owners have bought their first gun. And people in slave states like New York and New Germany are not going to sit for long as the rulers and their insane anti-gun laws keep them from buying guns. And the next election, you think all the rioters and looters will show up to vote? I imagine most of them are too stupid to vote.
Yes, a choice must be made in November. And we need to educate the people what will happen with a democratic socialist take over.

  • The mob is winning because the rest of us aren’t fighting back – yet.

  • ” Why Is The Mob Winning? ”

Because, by and large, Americans have had such a soft life that they are afraid of “trouble” and have become “tolerant.”

Tolerance is for those having no convictions.

  • The mob is winning because the tribe WANTS them to win. And the tribe run the Media in the West. They yearn for the “good old days” of their Messiahs – Lenin and Stalin. And intend to go there. BAMN!!!

  • I’m tired of writers complaining that “we’re not doing anything” to stop this. We have something to lose. We have jobs and mortgages and tuition and car payments. We aren’t unemployed losers rioting on George Soros’ dime. We are the people that pay parking tickets, car insurance premiums, and tithe to our churches. We can’t just saunter out into the streets and start blasting commie punks because we know we’ll be ruined and our families destitute. We haven’t abandoned our children and we were never planning on it and we know that taking matters into our own hands at this point risks losing all the things we’ve worked decades to build.

  • I’m another who is sick to death of writers telling me I’m not doing enough to combat the mob. I’m going to vote, I’m active in a dozen comment sections, I pay my taxes, I tell my Congressman what I think of him, I love my wife and family, and my 2A skills (etc.) are up to date.

Like others here I know just how bad things are and have a pretty good idea how much worse they can get. What is it that you believe I’m not doing that I should be? And until you can answer that, please, just SHUT UP. I am TIRED of your whining without something actionable attached.

Right now I’m regretting my modest donation to this site. If you must criticize your readers without stating what they ought to be doing, and least SAY you are without a clue. Or maybe better just delete the article?
